Ben Brafman Founder Talks about Fighting the Stigma for 22 Years

Although 1 in 4 people experience some type of mental illness each year, and 1 in 17 lives with a serious condition such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, many go untreated due to the stigma attached to mental illness. Ben Brafman, founder and CEO of Destination Hope has been fighting the stigma attached to mental health disorders for 22 years. He says that “having a better understanding of the entire mental health industry” helped him understand what was lacking in patient care. He pioneered specialized treatment programs at Destination Hope for Women in recognition of the specific needs of women in recovery.

Brafman explains that “there are a ton of resources in Broward County but it almost feels as if it is a secret” and has provided a list of local services. It is possible that encouraging people to talk about mental health will go a long way to remove the stigma. Conversation can break down barriers and help people realize they don’t have to shoulder burdens alone.
