Drug Treatment

The success of drug treatment programs

Studies have revealed that the longer an addicted individual participates in a drug treatment and recovery program, the greater the likelihood that they will recover completely and not relapse back into their addictions when they return to society.  Therefore, it makes sense that a successful recovery requires a lifetime commitment to remaining substance-free.  Additionally, when addicted individuals recover and swear to complete abstinence for the rest of their lives, drug treatment works better than for those individual’s who believe that moderation is acceptable.

Drug treatment for women

Drug treatment and recovery programs are seeing more women enrolled in them than ever before.  There are a number of reasons for addiction occurring in women, but the following seem to be the most common ones:

  • past traumatic experiences involving either physical or sexual abuse
  • families histories of alcohol and/or drug abuse
  • career and family pressures of everyday life, especially with single mothers

Additionally, research has revealed that roughly 70% of all women who need to be in a drug treatment program have become addicted to a substance because of the first reason above.  Statistics also show that when a person remains in a long-term drug treatment and recovery program, there is a greater chance of total recovery and lower odds that they will ever relapse back into their addictions.

So the answer to the question “does drug treatment for women work?” can be answered either yes or no, depending on certain factors surrounding the addiction.  These include:

  • type of substance they are addicted to
  • how long they have been addicted to that substance
  • duration of the drug treatment and recovery program
  • types of aftercare and long-term support provided

Due to the fact that that only minimal research has been conducted in order to compare different drug treatment programs in a controlled setting and that few statistics exist as a result of this, we can only assume that addicted women have the potential to recover.  Ironically, many women do not recover totally without relapsing and occasionally, those relapses occur several times.
