Prescription Drug Rehab
The current prescription drug threat in the US
According to a DEA report that was released at the end of 2009, the current drug threat in the US that the organization is primarily focusing on includes the following 6 substances:
- cocaine (crack and powder form)
- heroin
- marijuana
- MDMA’s (“club” drugs such as Ecstasy or GHB)
- methamphetamines (including crystal meth)
- prescription drugs and painkillers
It is the last one on the list that is the focal point of this content because the number of reported cases of abuse and addiction to these different medications is growing annually. The specific drugs of concern are the synthetic opiate-based painkillers such as Demerol, Oxycontin, Percocet, and Vicodin.
These four listed above are the primary ones that have created the need for prescription drug rehab programs at many addiction treatment and recovery centers throughout the US. It seems like everyday day we are hearing or reading about celebrities are getting addicted to these painkillers and going into a rehab center to recover. The problem with these addiction treatment and recovery centers is that the most of them do not realize that there is a significant difference between men and women where their addictions are concerned.
The need for women’s drug rehab facilities
Besides the physiological differences between men and women, there are key differences regarding prescription drug addiction and what causes it. The consequences for women health-wise are different and so is the way in which those addictions progress. Women who have addictions to prescription meds have typically undergone a traumatic experience in the past. In fact, physical and/or sexual abuse has been seen in their past histories nearly 70% of the time. There are also lengthy histories of alcohol and drug abuse evident as well.
As a result of the above, there has been a growing need for prescription drug rehab programs that target the needs of women.
