Oxycontin Drug Rehab
What is Oxycontin?
Oxycontin is the Purdue Pharma’s brand name for a single-ingredient, time-released oral oxycodone medication that is an opioid-based analgesic. It is widely prescribed by many doctors for its painkilling effects. Unfortunately, it is highly distributed and trafficked illegally and is now on the DEA’s “hit list” of primary drug threats in the US. As with any opiate, it is not so much that it is powerfully addictive, it creates a high dependency the more frequently it is taken.
More importantly and in addition to being one of the primary drug threats in the country, Oxycontin has also been considered a major public health threat. This is due primarily to the fact that there are millions of cases involving serious illness, overdose, and even death that are associated with Oxycontin abuse.
Oxycontin side effects
When a person becomes dependent on Oxycontin, there are some very common side effects displayed, both physical and psychological. These include:
- bone pain
- fatigue and restlessness
- insomnia or other sleeping disorders
- muscle pain
- nausea and/or vomiting
- shakes and tremors
These are primarily the physical side effects of the drug, but there are also certain psychological and sociological effects that oftentimes come into play as well such as experiencing difficulties with:
- finances
- legal issues
- personal relationships
Being very similar to Vicodin, Oxycontin is usually prescribed for individuals who suffer with chronic pain. In reality, Oxycontin has oftentimes been referred to as synthetic heroin which is probably the main reason that it is consumed recreationally rather than for purely medical reasons.
Oxycontin addiction and women
Increasing numbers of Oxycontin addiction in women have been noticed in recent years which created a greater awareness of the fact that more Oxycontin drug rehab programs were needed. More importantly, as addictions act in different ways gender wise, this has put increased pressure on the need for Oxycontin drug rehab programs specifically geared towards women. Where any substance addiction is concerned, the consensus is that a woman’s addiction treatment and recovery needs are considerably different from a man’s.
For instance, there are different health challenges for women who are addicted to Oxycontin compared to men. Additionally, their addictions to the drug may progress in different fashion versus how they progress with men. The bottom line is that these differences have necessitated a different approach to the type of treatment and recovery therapies that are used for women.
