What is “crystal meth”?
Crystal meth is the synthetic form of amphetamine that is obtained in white crystalline powder form. Where obesity is concerned, it is treated with legalized amphetamines in some instances. However, crystal meth is strictly a party or recreational drug because it causes a euphoric high while at the same time enhancing one’s senses. It is not uncommon for the user to stay awake for days at a time as well as engaging in sexual activity that carries a high risk with it.
In addition to being a part of the methamphetamine family, it is considered a primary drug threat along with other substances such as cocaine (crack or powder), heroin, and MDMA’s (a.k.a. “club” drugs such as Ecstasy). This is according to a recently published DEA report (2009). Additionally, it is also viewed as a major public health threat based on millions of annually reported cases of serious illness, overdose, and death resulting from crystal meth abuse and addiction.
Crystal meth addiction and women
We are oftentimes asked the question “why do women start abusing crystal meth and get addicted to it?” Most women’s addictions, regardless of whether it is alcohol or drugs, can typically be traced back to some type of traumatic experience in the past such as physical and/or sexual abuse. There may also be a history of alcohol and/or drug addiction among the woman’s family members, especially where her parents are concerned.
Another factor is that more women are part of the workforce today, especially single mothers who are raising children and are the only wage earner in the home. The added pressure and stress of this type of lifestyle oftentimes drives a woman to seek escape or relief by abusing alcohol or drugs. Finally, depression will lead to addictive behavior as well. In most cases, there is also evidence of low self esteem.
Although there are no concise statistics where women and crystal meth addiction is concerned, it is clear that the growing rate of cases involving this powerfully addictive substance has created the need for more crystal meth drug rehab programs than ever before. Most addiction treatment and recovery facilities today have crystal meth drug rehab programs. Unfortunately, the majority of them approach the addiction by using a single application to treat both men and women.
