An excellent alcohol rehab program can change your life, and lead an alcoholic into a life of recovery. That said, there are many different alcohol rehab programs available and many of them do not offer high quality programs.
How is someone supposed to know which programs are solid and which ones are lacking in effectiveness? It can be a difficult process, so we compiled a list of important things to look for when selecting an alcohol rehab program. We hope that this information will help simplify your search so that you or your loved one can get the help they need for their alcohol addiction.
One easy way to differentiate the best programs from the average programs is by asking about their accreditations. The best programs are accredited by the Joint Commission to provide substance abuse treatment.
The Joint Commission is an independent national accrediting agency that sets standards and goals that each accredited facility must adhere to. In order to become and remain accredited, each facility must maintain the highest quality standards at all times resulting in outstanding patient care.
Clinicians at an alcohol rehab program should have at least a Master’s degree or higher, and the majority of them should also be Certified Addiction Professionals (CAPs). In addition, there should be a physician or nurse practitioner on staff to help with any medical issues a client might have and to manage any prescribed medications.
There are varying opinions as to whether the staff should or shouldn’t be in recovery themselves. Our feeling at Destination Hope: The Women’s Program is that there should be a good mixture of recovering and non-recovering staff members.
This way clients have the added benefit of highly educated clinicians and the ability to relate to people in recovery who have been where they are and who have overcome addiction.
When selecting a treatment program, the costs should be clearly defined up front. If the facility accepts insurance, they should tell you what level of coverage you have before you arrive (i.e. 100%, 80%, etc) and if there are any out of pocket costs that you will be responsible to pay.
When you are speaking to treatment centers, be sure to ask what is included in the price. For example, if you are going to a residential program be sure to ask if the housing and food are included in the program cost or if they are charged separately. If an alcohol rehab program is not open to discussing all of the costs, find another treatment center.
